#1: Yours truly at the 'official' confluence point

(visited by Gilles Kohl and Erika Thill)

03-Feb-2001 -- Our first confluence hunt was in the rain (50N 9E), the second one was in gorgeous sunshine (49N 7E), this one (49N 10E) was in the snow.

We had driven from Karlsruhe to Waiblingen near Stuttgart on Friday, to meet a bunch of palmtop and GPS aficionados - it had started to snow while we were having dinner at the meeting place. We stayed overnight and about 15cm of snow had fallen in the morning, and it was still snowing. As we progressed towards the CP, we gained altitude and had to use smaller local roads which were not fully cleaned of snow - as a result, the trip took us 2 and a half hours instead of the estimated 1 hour. The closest point we could get to the confluence by car was 1.3 km away. (We had hoped we could get a little closer but the forest roads we had counted on were not useable for our type of car - we were afraid to get stuck in the snow)

After some 40 minutes walk through snowy woods, we arrived at a sign (see picture) that indicated the confluence point - nice ! (The sign is on a trail that passes close to the CP, but according to my GPS, it is still 160m from the actual confluence point)

We had to try to get closer to meet the goals of the project. The closest I was able to make it to was 25 meters. No way to get any closer through the thick undergrowth heavy with snow. But we made it below the 100m limit, so this is a successful confluence visit after all.

Looking forward to the next one, and curious about the weather we'll have this time ...

P.S.: Here's a tip for fellow confluence hunters - check out the web sites of towns/villages close to the confluence. I found out that e.g the municipality of Rosenberg close to N49E10 ( www.gemeinde-rosenberg.de) sent out free hiking maps that can be ordered over the net. I ordered one and it arrived promptly, along with a wealth of information. Thanks guys !
