30-Dec-2000 -- This confluence is located on a north-ish facing slope
of the Bristol Mountains in the Mojave Desert.
We left I-40 at Ludlow, and followed the abandoned
Tonopah and Tidewater rail bed across Broadwell Lake
We then headed East on the powerline road.
Approaching from I-15 and driving south would be possible,
but because of Devil's Playground and Soda lake it would
require either going via Afton Canyon to the West, or
going to Kelso to the East and following the train tracks.
Oddly, the powerline road has reminants of pavement, but
at this time it requires 4wd because of a few washes.
The desert in this area is surprisingly unstepped on.
The only signs of man were within a few hundred yards
of the powerline. The route we chose lead up a wide
wash and then up a narrower wash with interesting wind
carved rocks.
From the confluence, we could see the Mojave River
wash, the Amtrak train line and a small portion of I-15.
We left the confluence just before the sun set behind
the nearest peak and had a leisurely walk back to the truck.
One note about the fly over. I generated it by
using a freely available program called Microdem
to merge 4 24k Digital Elevation Maps and generate the
fly over movie. At the end of the movie, a slot is visible
on the left side, this slot is an artifact of merging the
maps.
