22-Feb-2001 -- Third Time Lucky
On my first attempt at this confluence point I ran out of time. By the time I'd found a track that would take me towards the point, I had to race to catch my plane home. The second trip, I met two large german shepherds but no-one else was home.
Visiting the area again to do some work at one of the large coal mines, luck was with me this time. I arrived at the farmhouse and explained the reason for my visit. Barry was quite friendly and gave directions to find my way on his farm tracks and explained that only one dog greeted me because the other was killed by a large snake a few days ago. (hmm .. mental note to tread carefully) The property is called Floradale and is 1560 hectares (about 3744 acres for non-metrics). They grow mainly sorghum and sunflowers with a little wheat and corn.
Driving across the property I managed to get to within 800 metres of the point and it was an easy walk from there, being careful not to trample the new sunflower seedlings sprouting from the stubble of last season’s wheat. This site should be a contender for prettiest site in a few months when the sunflowers are in bloom. Maybe I’ll make a fourth visit to see that.
