05-Apr-2001 -- How long does it take 28 eighth grade students, two teachers, four parents in five SUVs to find a confluence 26 miles deep in the Shasta wilderness area? Longer than we had light.....we arrived at the confluence three hours after we began at 9:45 p.m.
Incredibly, we drove to the exact point following our topo and are GPS units. A logging spot along the trail surrounded by pine forest NW of the Pit River and Big Bend yielded the numbers we were looking for: N41 W122.
The students helped clear downed trees and rocks from the roads as we raced the sun and an incoming storm. This was the only time we had, as our plans for the next morning would surely be washed out with the snow and rain. We had just driven three hours to get to our destination of Fall River Mills where we would stay the night and look for the confluence in the morning. However, the weather report and incoming clouds spurred us on!
Our trip was successful thanks to California Surveying
and Drafting Supplies who provided the topo maps,
Karen Agee who piloted a previsit flyover, the Fall
River Mills Seventh-day Adventist Church and School
for overnight housing, and student Allison Comm, our
digital photographer.
