31-Mar-2001 -- Day Three. There has been a dramatic change of scenery from the Ozarks as we are heading toward the delta.
The maps showed us that there should be some local roads that would get us to within a small walk to the confluence, and that it is also along a drainage ditch. With our first approach coming from the south, we were running in to mud-laden dirt roads that the Audi was starting to hvae some difficulty with, since it is not the Quattro version, just the front wheel drive. Apparently somebody forgot to tell the farmer were the county roads were supposed to be and he plowed right through one, making the southern approach all but to risky to take the Audi in any further. Jon suggested to take the northern approach, passing through the town of Four Gums. It appeared that the town of Four Gums consisted of more broken vehicles than people and houses combined. So we blinked, missed seeing the rest of the sprawling metropolis, and continued on the northern approach. The roads were a bit drier, and we were able to park with in a quater mile walk.
So hoping for nothing like the previous day's ditch walking, we were pleased that our boots stayed reletively mud free. We walked to the north-south line, and found an even drier ditch bank to walk on and we concluded that the confluence must either be in the ditch or on the embankment. With a little patience we did get the ever glamorous exact conflunce GPS shot. Not a bad run. When leaving the site Jon was feeling that he had not experienced the full feel of rally driving by just watching TV, so he took us on a good run of rally running the Audi on the dirt roads back to the US highway, doing his best impression of Colin McRae on some mud filled European Rally Course. Five confluences down, 3 to go. Next stop, Memphis TN for
N35 W90.
