#1: VIew from the confluence facing south

(visited by Jonathan Beck and Jody Turner)

31-Mar-2001 -- N38 W90, our fourth and final confluence of the day, and 8th of the 3 day trip. This confluence resides on the Mississippi River's flood plain on the Illinois side of the river. The area is mostly farm land. We approached the confluence from the southeast, following roads that lead almost directly to the site. We reached a farm about 0.25 miles south of the site, but it was only a machine shed, no residents. There was a cultivator parked on the field road that looked like it led right to the spot. We went around the cultivator and drove along a small stream until we were right on top of the confluence. I was feeling like the confluence hunters in Saudi Arabia that can drive right to the spot with their vehichle!

We found the confluence on the side of the field road and marked it with our red stake. A little surprise to the farmer. We labeled the stake so he'd know what it was. We took a few pictures, looked around and headed for home. We drove the Audi on a Levee, but the levee was dry. 8 confluences, 3 days, 1400 some miles. Jon's 11th confluence, and Jody's 10th. Time to plan another expedition.
