02-Apr-2000 -- So close, yet so far...
28N 87E is situated on the Kangchung Glacier on the nort-east slopes of Mt. Everest, just 7.5 km east of the world's highest mountain.
On 30 March we landed in Lukhla, two days later reached Namche Bazaar, and a week later reached Lobuche - a small village at 4900 meters altitude. We spent three days here to gain some acclimatisation and then headed for our destination - a popular trekking peak, Kalapattar (5545 meters). We were just 10 km away from the top of Everest (and 3 km up...). The Confluence was on the Kangchung Glacier, just behind it, about 17 km from us.
We tried another approach, through Chukkhung Valley, but after three days of trekking we only got 500 meters closer. Anyway, the Confluence was behind a huge Himalaya ridge, on a glacier which I suppose will also be extremely hard to pass.
I decided to call it a confluence attempt... well at that time I already had one Confluence (51N 17E) and I was aware of 28N 87E when going to Nepal, but I knew it is situated on the Tibetan side in an area I consider extremely hard to reach.
