26-Apr-2001 -- Thursday
This confluence is in the Coyote Buttes Wilderness Study Area, which
straddles the Utah / Arizona border. Access is by hiking only. There are three
trail head access points. I used the Wire Pass Trail Head, which also provides
access to the Paria Canyon Primitive Area. The Coyote Buttes themselves are
available only to permit holders; the permits are available online.
I had been to the trail head parking area many times, as I use the
non-wilderness areas for mountain biking. The hike was very enjoyable, but
longer than I had expected. It took about 2.5 hours. The combination of sand,
wind and perspiration made me quite “gritty.”
When I reached the confluence I recognized it from Mr. Luttringhaus’
photos. (Sorry if I got the spelling wrong.) I left a small pile of rocks.
I saw lizards, stink bug and ants. There were many beautiful flowers.
The prickly pears were in bloom. The rocks formations are unique. A great day of
exploring!
