23-Dec-2000 -- I currently live in central New
York, but I grew up in Kansas. My family were going to be back in the
Midwest for the Christmas break visiting relatives and I thought it
would be fun to visit a couple of confluences.
38 N 95 W is south of my Dad's house and it appeared to be fairly
easy to reach, being a few hundred feet out into a field from a dirt
road, see aerial picture. We (Tom Jackson, my father, Justin, my older
son, Eric, my younger son, and myself Jim Jackson) arrived at the corner
of the road and parked the van just off the road in a access entrance to
the field. Just as we were getting out of the van, a farm truck was
coming down the road and slowing down. The gentleman came over to us
and was concerned that we were having car trouble. I explained that we
were seeking an intersection of latitude and longitude. He said that he
was the owner of the land and that for years there has been rumors and
speculation among his family and friends that the hedge row at the north
end of the field ran along the 38th parallel.
I told him that the 38th parallel should a bit south of the hedge row
and asked if we could go out into his field and find the intersection.
He agreed and we took off. We went a few hundred feet to the east along
the hedge row to 95 W and then south to 38 N. Pic #1 is taken from the
confluence
looking to the north with the hedge row behind us (from left, Justin,
Jim, Tom). Pic #2 is taken form the confluence looking south with Eric
pointing downward to indicate the picture direction is south. Pic #3
has Justin giving a compass direction of east. In both Pic #2 and #3
the stocking hat placed on a weed is the position that Pic#6 of the
Magellan GPS Tracker was taken showing 38 N 95 W. Pic #4 is
to the west and Pic #5 is to the north.
