#1: View N from confluence

(visited by David Burren)

09-Jul-2001 -- Having visited 38S 144E and 38S 143E, I figured I'd make it a hat-trick and fit 37S 143E into the same afternoon.

Drive from Stawell east along the road to Avoca. This is part of the Goldfields Tourist Route. After 20kms or so the road eventually crosses a bridge and you come to a war memorial at Joel Joel. Immediately afterwards turn left into Glenoma Rd. This unsealed road takes you to within 450m of the confluence. 2kms along the road, another road from the right meets this road, just north of 37S. The confluence is on your left through two fences, just before the small hill you can see.

As I was leaving the paddock and about to photograph the signpost at the corner I met the landowner of a neighbouring property. He was well aware he lived on the 37th Parallel, but wasn't aware that 143E came down and intersected it on his neighbour's property.

This is in an area of Victoria where gold fever hit strongly last century (thus the Tourist Route mentioned above). Scattered across the paddock (amongst the sheep and rabbit droppings) were small quartz rocks - definitely gold country.

As well as the sheep in the paddock, there was lots of birdlife around. As I returned to my car it was almost dusk. An egret watched me from a dam in an adjoining paddock, flocks of lorikeets flew around (one missing me by centimetres), and a swan flew overhead. Several kilometres away as I drove back to Stawell I had to brake suddenly for some Grey Kangaroos which decided to cross the road in front of me.
