01-Sep-2001 -- Listening to the radio I heard that the Medicine Hat area
for the first time in recorded history had no rain in
August. Grass fires and forest fires are a real concern
to all who live down here. This weekend had seen many
campgrounds closed in southern Alberta for this reason, and
the landowner on whose property the confluence lies was
quite concerned that I do nothing to start a fire, which
means no throwing away of cigarette butts (I don't smoke
so this isn't a problem), making sure there is no grass
touching the vehicle muffler or exhaust pipe, etc.
This
confluence only lies about 20-30 meters west of a road on
the landowners property, so I didn't even have to leave the
road with my vehicle. This is probably the shortest hike
I've had yet confluence hunting. :-) But it is a little
unsettling to walk on the grass and just hear "crunch,
crunch, crunch".
