(visited by Mike McDonald)

23-Oct-2001 -- This was the second stop on the geoexploring trip. Like the confluence at N40-W102, this one is near the middle of an expanse of range and farm land, defined by a perimeter of dirt section roads. Section roads follow section lines, which are survey lines that ideally run true north/south and east/west, spaced one mile apart. However, not all section lines have roads, so the roads may be farther apart than a mile, which is true at this confluence. Closest approach was on the west side, along Road 3 on the way to Mt. Sunflower, the highest point in Kansas, just 2.5 miles from the confluence. There were a couple of roads that went towards the confluence from the east, off Road 6, but the southern one faded into the middle of a field with a newly growing crop (winter wheat?). All the perimeter roads were well maintained dirt/gravel county roads, but the roads going towards the interior of the area were just dirt farm roads. The roads on the east side did not have fences alongside them, but Road 3 on the west side did. There is a house on both the west and east sides of the area containing the confluence, near N39 degrees. I suspect permission to get to the confluence could be obtained at one of these, with the one on the west side being more likely. After dealing with the heights of Mt. Sunflower, it was on to the confluence at N37-W102, bypassing N38-W102, since others had successfully visited it.
