#1: 113 degrees West at Colorado River

(visited by Dale Stahlecker)

16-Oct-2001 -- Attempt? Well, not really an attempt. But I did get closer to this confluence with a GPS in hand than the Luettringhauses did on 21 July 2001. They were turned back by a sign requiring a permit from the Haulapi Tribe, on whose lands this confluence "resides". And they were unable on a get a permit, albeit on a Saturday.

Between 3 and 19 October I was on a 17 day canoe/raft trip on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon with 13 friends. I received good natured ribbing about taking GPS waypoints at various locales at each of our camps. On the morning of 16 October we were camped at the mouth of Fern Glen Canyon, 168 miles below the put in at Lee's Ferry, and I noticed that we were about 15' north and 5' east (and 18.4 miles from) of the 36° N./113° W. confluence. As we floated downstream through mainly flat water I kept my GPS receiver operating, watching for the point I would cross 113° W. Because of the canyon walls, I might not be able to get enough satellites for a position, dependent upon where in the river I was floating. At 113° W., 16.4 miles north of the confluence and approximately 173 miles below Lee's Ferry, I took the pictures of my canoe at river level (#1) and the top of the canyon rim, 2300 feet above (#2). No getting to the confluence following 113° W. south!

Later that day I took a waypoint above Lava Falls (Mile 179), which was 14.5 miles from the confluence. We were distracted (Picture #3)! The closest we got to the confluence was 13.9 miles at Mile 183. Where the Luettringhauses were stopped at US 66, they were 35.3 miles from the confluence.

Mohawk Canyon, at Mile 171.5, is 16.2 miles from the confluence and likely walkable to the confluence, as is Prospect Canyon at Lava Falls. But all the land between the river and the confluence is Hualapi, but I would not undertake such a marathon hike without a permit, and if a permit can be gotten, the only wise thing to do is drive there!
