28-Sep-1999 -- On Tuesday, Sept. 28 1999 at approximately
10am, Claudia Johnston (a Salty Sailor), Steven Holloway (my Cartography
Advisor) and myself went in search of 47N 114W. This confluence lays
just outside Missoula, Montana and after intense study of the topographical
map, we discovered that it was actually just outside Claudia's wonderful
mountain side home.
47N 114W was located almost centerline on Snow Bowl road and
what a verification it was. We each brought our own GPS receiver, a
professional Trimble from the Geography Department, a Garmin 12 used
for hiking and a Magellan 300 that was given away for free just for test
driving a Cadillac. Sure, you might think this was overkill but like most
outdoor adventures, it always pays to have extra gear. The Trimble died
as soon as we pulled up to the spot and the Garmin died while trying to
get a good fix on the confluence. So the Cartographer professor and his
student had to be rescued by the salty Sailor and her free Magellan.
