#1: The spot

(visited by Owen Foley)

26-Mar-2002 -- This is a typical Australian confluence. It’s out in the middle of nowhere and there isn’t anything remarkable about it. 23°S 147°E is 74 kilometres from Clermont on the dirt road to Alpha which is 94 kilometres further on. The road passes through parched grazing country and crosses some stony hills. The only hint of civilization on the road is the Mistake Creek school, a one-teacher school for the children who live on the large cattle properties around.

The road passes within one kilometer of the point and following an old track I was able to get within 500 metres. It was easy walking the rest of the way through regrowing brigalow and eucalypts on land that had been cleared in the past. I found a few large kangaroos resting in the shade near the confluence and they jumped away as I came closer.
