27-Jul-2000 -- The 35-86 confluence is only a few miles out of the
way when traveling along Hwy 72 from Huntsville Alabama to Chattanooga,
Tennessee. Why was I going to Chattanooga? Because it's there! For those of
you who have never been to Chattanooga, its a wonderful town. Go see it some
time.
It was a short trip up hwy 117 to Jackson County road 56 for the approach
to the confluence from the east. The only problem was when turning onto Round
Cove Road. There was a gate across the road with an old faded "no
trespassing" sign that mentioned a hunting lease. I took a photo of the gate
with the confluence two miles further in the distance and then headed north on
County road 56 to see what else I could find. Unfortunately there were no other
roads leading closer to the confluence. The closest I could get by road was 1.99
miles east.
I did discover another interesting fact on my journey. The Alabama/Tennessee
state line is not on 35 degree latitude line. Its about .33 minutes south. If anyone
knows the story as to why the state line does not lie directly on 35 degrees, email me
and let me know.
