#1: Standing over point with GPS

(visited by David Nelson and David Rice)

04-Feb-2001 -- On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, 4 February 2001, David Nelson and David Rice set out in pursuit of confluence 36 degrees north 83 degrees west.

We have always lived in this area, and after studing the maps at this website, we felt confident of our success.

Our journey began on E Hwy 25/70 out of Newport, TN to State Route 340 and on to Long Creek Road. From Long Creek Road, we turned left on Kenyon Road .

Using our GPS, we traveled approximately 2 miles until we crossed 36 degrees N. Continuing on we reached the top of the hill, we used the Terraserver Picture. After studying the tree line, old barn and fields, we knew where to go from here.

We decided to cross a ridge thus avoiding a big barking dog at an old farmhouse. We walked approximately 3/4 of a mile to the valley and tree line, and again using our GPS we verified the exact location. After taking a number of pictures, we built a small rock pyramid to mark the spot.

We phoned our wives on a cell phone. They, of course, were very impressed with their macho exlporers (ha, ha). Then leaving our discovery, we decided to find ourselves a cold beer at our favorite longitude and latitude (or confluence).

We are now hard at work on our next find. We already have it mapped down to the subdivision in which it is located. (This is located in Cocke County Tennessee not Cooke County).

Thanks,
David and David
