(visited by Ilkka Malmberg)

22-May-2002 -- The confluence point was easily reached although it is situated in the middle of forest. The area is reindeer pasture, flat, sandy pine-heath right next to Lake Livo in Southern Lapland.

There happens to be a well-marked trail that goes past the confluence, and because the reindeer-herdsmen and fishermen are not too eager to walk the trail is widened so much you easily drive, as I did. Shame on me.

Beautiful area: lots of ponds, heather and pines, very easy to walk anywhere you want. At the same time it is very vulnerable, too, you can see signs of erosion. Here you can see ancient tar-burning pits and some old sand pits, too.

It's hard to imagine what were the sand pits for, maybe for reinforcing the trail maybe for tar-burning. Some reindeer round-ups were to be seen about one kilometer before the confluence point.

The point is on the edge of a little sand pit. Very easy to find. A beautiful pond lies about 200 meters further. You can see remnants of a campfire: some burnt wood and a trunk to sit on.

Silence. No people, no reindeers. A mistle thrush (Turdus viscivorus) flew over.
