03-Jul-2002 -- While spending time at our family cabin on Big Sand Lake we decided to make the 2.8 mile trip to the confluence near the western shore of the lake. We were able to drive the entire distance to the confluence. The road took us through a large grove of pine trees and within yards of a golf course.
The small town of Dorset is a busy place during the summer months and nearly deserted in the winter. The town consists of a few restaurants, gift shops, antique stores and a bed and breakfast. The tracks for the Burlington Northern Rail Road, which was used for logging in earlier years, have been removed and replaced with the Heartland Trail which is a 48 mile long bike trail running East and West from Park Rapids through Dorset to Cass Lake. The trail is very scenic, passing through wooded areas and past lakes. Near the Cass Lake end of the Heartland Trail it connects with the Paul Bunyan Bike Trail which is a 100 mile long trail running North and South.
