03-Aug-2002 -- Every late July and early August I try to collect cloudberries to make a wonderful jam. This year's summer has been extraordinarily warm in north Sweden, and the cloudberries were over ripe when I came back from a cycle tour in Iceland and Faroe Islands. So I decided to go north to find perfect cloudberries. Lannavaara is a good place to look for them. Oh, the 68Nx22E confluence point is just south of Lannavaara. Excellent.
I arrived at Silkkimuotka at 18:30 after a 7 hours drive from Boliden, and drove towards Tuolpukka along a gravel road. After about 5 km, the Toulpukka road turned right, while the road towards the confluence point was straight ahead. After a further 10 km, there was a small road to the north, leading almost to the confluence point.
There was a gate after 100 m, so I walked the 2 km to the road end. Then it was some 400 m along a footpath, and 200 m through a beautiful forest. The confluence point is located at 363 m elevation in a young spruce plantation, just north of the mountain Iso Sattavaara. The beautiful mountain Kourmakka could be seen 20 km to the north.
On the way back to the car I saw two reindeer and two whooper swans. I did not find many cloudberries however. The evening was warm, and the setting sun was extremely beautiful when it shone on the pine tree trunks along Torne river between Junosuando and Pajala. Arrived in Pajala at 22:00.
