23-Oct-2000 -- On October 23, 2000 my friend Larry and I visited N43 W122. This place is located
in eastern Oregon on the edge of Crater Lake National Park. It isn't really in eastern Oregon but
Oregonians think everything east of the summit of the Cascade Mountains is eastern Oregon.
This is because most of the population in Oregon lives west of the Cascades.
Longitude 122N is the eastern boundary line of Crater Lake National Park. If you look
west you see the old growth forest that has been protected because it is in a national park. If
you look east you see much younger trees in the national forest that have grown back since
the original forest was cut.
Larry and I went directly to the site. I had researched the location on maps. Thanks to the
forest service logging roads and using my Magellan GPS we could drive to within 500 feet with
not so much as a wrong turn. Unfortunately the photo of my GPS zeroed out at N43 W122 didn't
come out due to glare.
While this site is listed as 10.4 miles SW of Diamond Lake Junction and that location is
helpful to find the site, the really premier landmark is Crater Lake. This site is on the northeast flanks
of Crater Lake. We didn't go to see Crater Lake on this trip but I have included some USGS
photos [not posted here due to copyright concerns] and if you are interested please visit the
Crater Lake website.
Many thanks to the Confluence project for making it possible to visit sites around the world from
your own home.
