  18°S 139°E (visit #1)

#1: General area - confluence is about a metre to the right of the termite mound in the foreground

(visited by Craig Giffen)

22-Aug-2002 -- This was my third confluence visit I've done during my bike trip around Australia.

I left Burketown in the early morning and rode along the unsealed Gulf Track. This area is somewhat remote and probably only about 15 cars drove past me the entire day. This confluence looked to be about 2km off the road, meaning it shouldn't be that much of a detour. About 10km east of the confluence some Aboriginal guys passed me and stopped. They asked me all kinds of questions. They offered me a ride up to the Doomagee turnoff but I declined, telling them I had to ride the whole way. One guy got out and was all ready to hoist my bike onto the back of the truck but I laughed and said that was alright. They left and I continued down the road until I reached the 139°E meridian. From there I just followed the GPS to the north, riding through brush, under trees, and around termite mounds. I reached the confluence about 30 minutes later.

I cannot take full credit for this confluence, about 3,000,000 flies were with me at the time. They gave me their hotmail addresses but I don't think they will all fit into this website. :) That $4.71 headnet I bought in Normanton sure came in handy. I had never seen so many flies in my life.

After taking the photos I made my way back out to the highway. I rode the highway a bit and another car passed me and stopped. They handed me a couple beers and drove off. I continued down the bumpy gravel road with the handlebar in one hand, and the beer in the other.
