28-Sep-2002 -- My first foray to 30N 98W was on 21 Sept. and somewhat spur of the moment. I approached the confluence from the south side of the Blanco River, which flows right by the confluence. The road I was on ended at a new residental development that had just a few houses. I parked just off the road and began walking toward the confluence. I had to scale down a steep drop down to the river plain. Walking along the river I came to one of the properties with a house on it. The property had a "no tresspassing" sign posted. I debated whether to cross the river (it was shallow enough to wade across), but decided not to as I didn't [have] extra clothes and shoes. So I took a couple of pictures, one of which is picture #6. I gave up that day and figured I would return the next week.
Exactly a week later, I approached the confluence from the north side of the river. I drove along FM3237 until the confluence was roughly due south. Nearby was the entrance to another new development area so I drove in (picture #4). Guiding myself with the GPS receiver I meandered along various roads until, luckily, a road took me to within 160m north of the point. The road ended in a cul-de-sac just a little bit further down so that's where I parked. I walked south through the woods until I came to a steep incline like I found the previous week. I didn't scale down as I wasn't getting any closer to the confluence, but I did take a picture (#5). You can't see the river but it's down in the valley in the distance (I could probably see where I was the previous week if the shaded ridge wasn't in the way). I got back to the road and walked up it until I got back to the "within 160m" point. There were driveways leading south into the woods here so I figured there were houses on these properties. I walked south along the line separating two properties figuring that I could approach whichever house I saw first and ask if it was okay for me to be there. But after walking a bit I got within 60m and still couldn't see any houses (these properties were much deeper than I expected). So I simply walked directly to the confluence point. As you can see from pictures #1 (looking west) and #2 (looking east) it is within typical Texas hill country woods. Picture #3 is of my GPS receiver. I backtracked back to the road and to my car.
I treated myself to an ice cream at the Dairy Queen in Wimberley before heading back to San Antonio.
I never did see the Freeman Ranch that the previous attempter noted.
