#1: Looking south from the confluence towards the fence line.

(visited by Alan Crawford, Adrian Bell and Bailey Crawford-Ong)

10-Oct-2002 -- I had gone out to this confluence the previous day with my wife Sharon, daughter Rebecca, Adrian and Bailey to have a look. We actually identified and walked over it, but not having a camera at the time I decided we should go back the next day.

About 4.20pm on Thursday afternoon myself, Adrian and Bailey headed out from Walgett. The Silva Multi-Navigator GPS was indicating that the confluence was 11.50km from the War Memorial on the roundabout in the main street. To get there we followed the signs to Brewarrina, crossing the Barwon River a few kilometers out of town and then turning west onto the Kamilaroi Highway and travelling towards Brewarrina. Before long, the Multi-Navigator was indicating that the confluence was just off to our left in a southernly direction.

When we stopped, the Silva GPS was indicating 75 meters away in a southerly direction. We walked to the site through some open scrub land until the Silva was indicating that we had zeroed in on the confluence which was about the same distance short of a boundary fence running parallel to the road.

It was then that the problems started. The little auto foucus camera was having difficulty focusing on the Silva's screen and refused to take a picture of it. When the GPS stabilised we found that we were .003 seconds south of the confluence but preventing us from moving about was a patch of fallen trees and broken scrub. With a bit of care I managed to get a photo of the GPS reading just .003 secs south of the mark. I hope this is sufficient becaue we would have been within 5 metres of the correct position.

About this confluence. All I can say is that it is easy to locate and get to. There is nothing really to look at except the open scrub as shown in the photographs. This area of Australia is in the grip of a drought and it hasn't rained here for about 18 months. Walgett is not a place on any tourist itinerary, but a place to pass through for many heading for Queensland or the opal country at Lightning Ridge. This was my first attempt and I'm looking forwards to locating more in NW NSW, Australia - hopefully more interesting.
