One more confluence has been conquered by the Walking Group. The 16°S 46°W is located in an area known as Arinos-MG. Arinos is at northwest of Minas Gerais state, 90km far from the Chapada Gaúcha Village. There we found the Grande Sertão Veredas park’s seat.

The grubbers of this conquest were only Kelly and I, since all the others gave up when we were almost to begin.

We went out from Brasília around ten o’clock in the morning. It was Friday, (October, 1st, 2002) and we got the BR-020 highway, passing through Formosa city’s entrance and turning to Cabeceiras city, which is located in Goiás state. We drove 40km of non-paved roads and 70km of paved roads from Cabeceiras to Arinos. Arriving at Arinos, the rain was the first attractive.

This region is one of the wildest we have ever visited. There we saw an infinity of animals. Although it is an ecological attraction, this region presents the highest rate of prohibited traffic of psittacidae (macaws, parrots, parrakeets,...) in Brazil. It is common to see nests on the trees. Since they are in low-height positions, it is really easy to get them.

Soon after lunch, we went out from the city going to Extrema farm (27km of non-paved road) In this farm, we had walked 600m in order to arrive at the confluence at 4:20 p.m. It was an easy conquest, there were no obstacles. There are few geographical formations, except for the Retirada saw, which can be seen at the westside of the confluence.

The Teiú Indians (Tupinambis teguixin) were relaxing beside the road. Agoutis and other rodents would pass in front of us all the time. Macaws, parrots and toucans were flying, colouring the sky. Tarantulas (Lasiodora sp) would expose themselves on the road, and any car could run over them.

Foi conquistada mais uma confluência, a 16S 46W que fica na região de Arinos-MG. Arinos situa-se no Noroeste de Minas, a 90 km do povoado de Chapada Gaúcha onde encontramos a sede do parque Grande Sertão Veredas. Os desbravadores dessa conquista foram apenas eu e a Kelly, já que todos os outros desistiram de última hora.

Saímos de Brasília por volta das 10 da manhã da sexta feira (01/10/2002), pegando a BR-020, passando pela entrada de Formosa-GO e virando em direção à Cabeceiras-GO. De Cabeceiras até Arinos foram 40 km de estrada de terra e mais 70 de asfalto. Ao chegarmos em Arinos a chuva deu-nos boas vindas. A região é umas das mais selvagens que já estive. Avistamos uma infinidade de animais. Apesar de ser um atrativo ecológico, essa região apresenta o maior índice de contrabando de psitacidae(araras, papagaios, periquitos, ...) do Brasil. É comum vermos ninhos pendurados nas árvores numa altura bem baixa, ao alcance das mãos.

Logo depois do almoço, saímos da cidade em direção à fazenda Extrema(27 km em estrada de terra). Na fazenda, andamos uns 600m até chegarmos na confluência às 16:20 da tarde. Foi uma conquista tranqüila, sem nenhum obstáculo. Existem poucas formações geográficas, com excessão da Serra Retirada que podemos avistar a oeste da confluência.

Os teiús (Tupinambis teguixin) ficavam tomando sol do lado da estrada, cutias e outros roedores cruzavam na nossa frente o tempo todo, araras, papagaios, tucanos coloriam o céu, as aranhas caranguejeiras (Lasiodora sp) se expunham na estrada com o risco de serem atropeladas.
