(visited by Robert Fenske, Jr.)
05-Jan-2003 -- After the successful visit to 31N 103W, I headed north toward my next target: 32N 103W, which had not been visited at all. As expected the countryside stayed pretty much the same -- mostly flat, somewhat dry country with the occasional oil or natural gas pump dotting the landscape. Upon getting near the confluence, I zigzagged my way over to Ranch Road 1218. This area was quite full of oil pumps. After going down the road about to the point where it tracks the NM-TX border, I turned around. Soon I was heading east down a gravel road I had previously picked out. I shortly came to a fence 6 km from the confluence (picture #1). Back to 1218, then south to another gravel road. This one simply came to a dead end 5.4 km from the target. There was no fence but I didn't feel up to a ~11 km round trip hike (picture #2). With no other gravel roads that seemed helpful, I worked my way over to TX 115. This road came within 4.9 km of the confluence, which happened to be near another fenced road (picture #3). At this point I decided to give up. Looks like the best bet would be to hit the second gravel road I tried and hike the 5.4 km to the confluence. |
