09-May-2003 -- 49 North - 55 West is in Newfoundland, Canada.
Today I made a visit to my waypoint, which
I had named on my GPS as "CONF4955".
I had reviewed the topo map and had created several waypoints to look for along the way. I should have expected
that the roads showing on the map were logging roads of
approx. 30 years ago. Except for the first km after leaving the Trans Canada Highway I could not find the road. I used a 4 wheel drive ATV to cross country towards it.
The weather today was +5 deg Celcius and rain showers.
The wooded area around the confluence still has some spots
of snow that makes 4 wheeling difficult. In addition to the snow the scrub black spruce was so thickly grown that
navigating though it except on foot was almost impossible.
I drove to within 58 meters of my "CONF4955" and walked
in for the claim. The wooded area has only about a 20 meter
visibility in any area. The elevation is 642 feet. The soil is covered with mossy rocks that makes it a poor growing area even for black spruce.
