27-Mar-2003 -- After our successful visit to 28°N 114°W and some successful whale watching at Laguna San Ignacio we crossed over to the Sea of Cortez side of Baja and ended up in Mulege. This confluence is just 12km north of town, but it is located in the Sea of Cortez.

South of Mulege we drove up to a microwave tower on a hill to get an overview and take pictures. Picture 1 shows the approximate location of the confluence. Mulege is located in front of the hill on the left.

Some of our maps showed a dirt road leading to place called Playa Santines. Our plan was drive to this beach and try to find someone with a boat who could take us out to the point. We left Mulege on Hwy 1 and headed north. Following along with OziExplorer we found the road to the beach right where it should have been. Picture 2 shows us parked at the first dunes of the beach with the confluence about 1.6 km straight in front of us.

Picture 3 shows the totally deserted beach. The buildings in the distance are those of Punta Chivato. Once I started walking into the water for picture 4 I noticed little rays dart all over the place, so I walked with a careful eye on my feet. These little beasts have a very painful sting and may well be the reason why this nice beach was deserted. When the picture was taken I was 1.44 km from the confluence, the closest we could get without some kind of floating transportation.

On a calm day like the day we chose for our attempt it should not be a problem to paddle out to the spot if you bring your own boat/canoe. Alternatively one could try to hire someone with a boat in Punta Chivato or Mulege.

Once back on Hwy 1 we drove north to Santa Rosalia for lunch and a look an iron church (picture 5) designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (Yep, the one that build that tower)
