21-Oct-2000 -- Now you can visit a stash
(http://www.geocaching.com)
and a confluence on the same trip. Ann & Robert Johnson placed a
modest stash here on a windy
Saturday. Using a Garmin eMap (with averaging), the confluence was found to
be approximately 15 ft. SE of the original point located with a Garmin
ColorMap. Total roundtrip (driving and walking) is three hours from Beatty,
Nevada.
02-Sep-2000 -- Beatty is known as the "Gateway to Death Valley". For
those visiting the Valley consider staying in one of Beatty’s
inexpensive hotels (the Exchange has better gambling, the Burro has
better food, the Stagecoach is not recommended). One trip not to miss
is Titus Canyon. It's about a 5 hour round trip from Beatty and a
moderate clearance vehicle is recommended. To start on the Titus road,
go south from Beatty on Hwy 374 about 6 mi. to (N36.85916 W116.84594).
Turn right at the sign. As I write this (September 9, 2000) Titus is
closed because of washouts. Always check road conditions at
http://www.nps.gov/deva/Morning.htm or call (760) 786-2331.
To get to the confluence, go north on Hwy 95 from the center of
Beatty, NV
(N36.9087 W116.7593) aprox. 10 mi.
Turn left at the dirt road (N37.0491 W116.7716) for aprox. 14 mi.
Moderate
clearance 2 wheel drive vehicle is ok.
Park along the road (N36.9859 W117.000). Confluence is 1.0 mile due
north
across mostly level ground. Wear long pants because of the
sagebrush.
Desert travel rules apply:
Take plenty of water.
Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
If you come across an open gate, leave it open. If you come across
a closed gate, close it behind you.
I hope to put a Stash out there this November.
Have fun!
