17-Mar-2001 -- It is amazing how many dirt roads there are in the desert southwest of the US. Looking for this confluence we had spotted some dirt roads on top maps that should lead us fairly close to the confluence. Once we got to the area it turned out that there were many roads leading in the general direction of the confluence. The first one we choose brought us within 1.2 miles, with a little over ½ hour sun light left we decided to try it on foot. We got to the spot, but with all the washes we had to cross it took longer than expected. By now it was too dark to take pictures.

On the way back to the car it paid off that we had marked the car's position and brought some flash lights. Once back at the car we decided to camp right there and to try to drive closer to the confluence in the morning. We had seen a faint road only a few yards from the confluence. In the morning we tried another road which turned out to be a dead end and never got us closer than 1.5 miles to the confluence. We now drove the highway up and down between the roads we had taken and looked more closely for faint roads and sure enough we found the right one.

Being in such a remote part of the country, I had hoped for a very quite night with a star filled sky. As it turned out we were not far enough away from civilization. There was the occasional truck on the highway 2 miles away and the night sky to the south of us was polluted by the light of Las Vegas about 100 miles away.
