#1: Confluence point facing south

(visited by Rob Mills)

27-Jun-2003 -- It was a beautiful sunny day on Grand Lake. Fortunately this was a very easy visit for me as the confluence was 3.41 miles down the lake from my cottage.

The lake was extremely choppy with the normal prevailing wind out of the southwest. This made getting the exact location all the more challenging with trying to steer my watercraft, keep an eye on my gps and keep my camera ready and dry.

After about 15 minutes of idling around the general location I managed to get directly upwind and let the waves and current carry me to the confluence. I took several pictures of my gps and was lucky enough to catch one at the right time. Gps accuracy was 21 ft.

Photo #3 shows Goat Island, one of two islands on the lake. The confluence is southeast of the island. The horizon is a bit tilted as a large wave tossed me around just as I snapped the pic. The area between the west shore and the island looks deceivingly passable but can be extremely shallow in summertime. The main navigation channel passes just off of Goat Island so look for the large green buoy as you pass it. The northern side of the island is a popular mooring/swimming area as it is usually sheltered from the prevailing winds.

For anyone attempting a visit I would suggest going early in the morning. The wind normally picks up around this area later on in the mornings. I have seen perfectly calm days but they are the exception. As this is a fairly large body of water conditions can change quite rapidly so please be careful if you are out in a small craft.

Grand Lake is a wonderful place and I encourage all who are in the area to pay it a visit.
