07-Jul-2000 -- We borrowed Joe's GPS and set off for Gap, PA. Right on the edge of Pennsylvania Amish country in Lancaster County, where religious folk still maintain a traditional low-tech life of farming. One must be careful driving in these parts since the Amish travel in horse-drawn buggies, and the tourists are making sudden turns into the many antique shops in the area.

After reaching the intersection of routes 30 and 897, we starting checking our location near each intersection. We would hold the GPS and walk until a number changed, then walk perpendicular until a number changed to determine what direction we needed to head.

When we reached the edge of the cornfield we walked along its length to until our latitude came to 40.00.00. We could tell by walking back across the street that to get to 76.00.00 we would need to walk to about the base of the hill in the cornfield. Since the corn was well into the growing season, we decided to respect the farmer by not trampling the corn. If any one wants to stand directly on the location 40N 76W, they should come when it is not growing season so they may enter the field without trampling the corn.

As we circled back around we noticed that the cornfield, sitting at 40N 76W is visible from route 30 as one drives east leaving Gap, PA.
