#1: Looking East toward Deer Island

(visited by Christopher Losi and Sarah Lathom)

25-Jun-2003 -- This is the first original confluence that we visited. It fit really nicely into our summer vacation-- a trip from Pennsylvania to Prince Edward Island.

We arrived on Deer Island just before noon and soon found ourselves at the 45th parallel restaurant (which, as those who attempted this confluence before note, is at 44°57'N).

Since neither of us have much kayaking experience, we decided to find a guide. Our guide was excited about trying a trip on the western side of the island since most tourists prefer the eastern edge, but didn't know where to put the kayaks in since there ar a lot of cliffs on this side of the island.

After a couple of hours of looking, he found us a pretty nice beach that we could drive to. We launched in the early evening as the beach was disappearing beneath the tides (the Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world) and kayaked by some pretty nice cliffs.

The water was perfectly calm, and we could see across Passamaquoddy bay to the New Brunswick mainland (#2). The confluence was a bit further from the coast of Deer Island than we expected, but we could still see buildings from it.

We also saw several aquaculture "ponds" on our way to the confluence.

Sadly, the autofocus camera didn't focus at such a short range to clearly show the GPS screen. We marked our waypoint at 45°0.001'N 67°0.000'W.

In the Bay of Fundy, about 350 m from Deer Island. The borderline with the U.S. is running about 3.6 km WSW of the Confluence.
