25-Jul-2003 -- Enroute to St. John's to participate in the Tely-10 road race, Wayne and I decided to visit confluence 48N 54W. About 3k north of the Goobies junction we got onto the Newfoundland Trailway, the former railway line that is now a Provincial Park and part of the Trans Canada Trail. We walked along the Trail for several kilometres. After turning onto a cabin access road, a few more kilometres of hiking brought us within 200 m of the confluence, near a small pond, one of many in the area.
The GPS indicated we had reached the 48N Latitude, and using information from the previous visitors' account, Wayne took the GPS and bravely waded into the pond. He discovered, however, that the point was not in the pond, but about 50 metres east of the pond's shoreline. The GPS "zeroed out" at the edge of a spruce-fir grove.
