#1: Confluence area.

(visited by Dan Doke)

27-Oct-2000 -- I visited this confluence on my way back from Kansas City to my home in St. Louis. I visited the other two confluence points off of I-70 on the way to Kansas City. N39 W94 had already been visited, but since I was really close to it off of I-70 I wanted to see it anyway. My N39 W92 visit has been posted. This one was a lot more difficult.

I am glad I had a lot of time on my way back to St. Louis for this one. The closest road was about a third of a mile from the confluence. I tried just driving around until I could get to the point easily. But it wasn't meant to be. I first was at a dead end road. Then I went in a small town and couldn't get to it from those roads. I went around the town and wound up waiting about 30 minutes at a RR crossing for a train to make its way at around 2.5 mile per hour.

I was finally on the right road to get there. I wound up going down DD highway to the closest point along the road to the confluence. I parked at a farmers small entrance to the field, and then started walking across the field to the point. I thought this was going to be easy. . .Nahh. .. I walked down a hill to where the point was and came to a small stream (but big enough that I couldn't cross it though) I was only 350 ft from the confluence at this point. . . errhh.

I almost gave up and went back the car at this point. I didn't feel like getting my feet wet and didn't want to take the time to find a crossing point. But, I knew that I would later regret it being so close and all. So I decided to head up stream to see if I could cross safely (and not get my feet wet).

I went about 300 or 400 yards and found two trees that made two really nice bridges. I first had to go over a barbed wire fence. I had to hike upstream about another 100 yards to find a place that I could get through. Back down stream to the bridge I went. At this point, I was walking in an area that was a cow pasture. I stepped in one place that was really wet and "soiled" and the "stuff" squirted up on my leg just above my knee. So now I smelled like cow$#!t. Lovely... well, I marched on none the less.

I stepped up on the bridge and started across. I had already visited two confluence points on this trip. So I only had 4 or 5 pics left in my camera. So I didn't get any pictures of the bridge. I wish I could have, it was neat. As I walked to the other side, I was startled by a sudden rustling sound in the bushes along the stream. I looked up and almost fell off the bridge. I have never been this close to a deer before. I was only about 15 feet from it. I wish I could have gotten a picture, but it ran off.

Now I had to walk back down stream to the point. This was a piece of cake. It was in the middle of a corn field that had been harvested already. So it was easy walking. The first picture is of the point looking south. I then walked right to the point. I was pleased to finally have reached it after so much work and aggravation. Picture #2 is closer to the confluence. Picture three is closer still. And finally the Standard GPS picture. Right on the Money.

Walking back was a little easier. I just used the coordinates that I saved for the car and used the GPS and headed in that direction from the fence crossing. Got back to the car and was really glad to finally be back there. I was really glad that I was on a trip because I had clothes to change into. But I still smelled when I got home. Even after two more hours of driving. But I was pleased to have reached this confluence. I plan on many more trips to confluence points.
