27-Sep-2000 -- This "Degree Confluence Project" is great!!
I just heard about it today and this was
an outstanding day for an outing. I have this little RED motor scooter this is always looking
for someplace to go. So, I plugged in 31N 87W into the Garmin GPS12 and found that if I went
15 deg for 40 miles I could log my first. Confluence. As I said, the weather was picture
perfect. I headed East (which is really North) on HWY 90 to Milton, Fla. Then North (really
North) on Hwy 87 to the Fla/ Ala line. Then East to the point. I embarked at exactly 3 PM.
The ride North on 87 is through the heart of farm land in Northwest Florida. And beautiful it
was field after field of crops of cotton and other thing that farmers grow.
I had pulled up the location on my Delorme Street Atlas and figured that this should me easy
enough to find. I was going to go N on 87 until a fairly major road that would take me E and
then N on a small dirt road. The only problem being that in my hast to set out on this
adventure I neglected to note the name of the road to go E on. As it happens this Confluence
is marked on the map as PUGH. I happened across a road called Pogue Thompson Rd (30 59.953N 87 02.196W). This name is too close to what I am looking for it not to be right. Well this road went about ¼ mile and then turns onto a fire trail. After winding around in the woods for
about 45 min taking one trail after another I end up at the at the Confluence which is only
about 100 feet or so from one of these trails. About 100 feet N of the Confluence is wide dirt
road running East and West. After I take by pictures of the spot I head West on this road to
find that it actually ends right beside where Pogue Thompson Rd ends. You can look
at the screen shot of my track and see the circle I made. All in
all this made for a very pleasant afternoon. Now I’m ready to get serious about logging. See
you on the trail!!!
