#1: View to the west

(visited by Daniel)

07-Jan-2004 -- During my holidays I decided to find some confluences; I figured this would also give me a reason to travel the outback, which I wouldn't normally do.

The confluence at 30°S 149°E seemed reachable using a 2WD followed by some walking. It has been my experience that unless you have a 4WD, the rocks and shrubs that can be found on unpaved, smaller roads have a much higher chance to damage the underside of a low sitting 2WD car including the fuel tank and the mud guards around the tires (if you guessed this happened to my car, you are right).

This is the second and last confluence that I nailed during my holidays. The other one was 30°S 147°E. This confluence was much easier to locate and travel to, due to the fact that it wasn't too hot by outback standards (only mid 30°Cs), and that the secondary and cotton field access roads were quite flat and didnt have that many rocks on them. This confluence is about 10km north of a place called Burren Junction.

The confluence lies on private cotton fields, I found this out after walking a few hundred metres and coming across a property fence. Fortunately the owner was working on the field at the time, only 100m on the other side of the fence. After I explained what I was doing he agreed to me bringing my car onto the field closer to the confluence.

After driving through a couple of secondary roads, passing through the property gate and then following cotton field roads I got my car within 400m of the confluence. (You can actually see my car in the 'View to the west' photo.)

As I was walking to the confluence the owner drove his ute towards me, we had another chat and I gave him some reading material about confluence.org.

I arrived at the confluence at 1:40pm. In two of the photos you can see some machinery that is used on the field.

The last picture is the gate to the property.
