06-Jan-2001 -- After the failures to reach my last two confluences,
I was starting to wonder if my luck had gone sour. I headed
West on HWY-2 for Mullens, NE. Along the way I pasted the
Nebraska National Forest. I didn't even know Nebraska had a
National Forest, but I'm looking forward to returning this summer
for some biking.
When I arrived at Mullens, the compass on the GPS confirmed
the information I received from this website. I needed to head southeast.
After traveling south for about two miles, I came across a single-lane
road heading east. After a short while I was in-line with 101°W, but still
too far north. The absence of "No Trespassing" signs
prompted me to climb over a barbwire fence and head towards my
destination.
As I approached the top of a small hill, I noticed that I was sharing
the field with a horse. The horse spotted his visitor and started galloping
at me with some pretty good speed. I froze. He hit the brakes about 15
feet in front of me and let out a neigh. When I started to walk again, he
fell in behind me and followed me across the field until I came to another
barbwire fence. I climbed over it and proceeded to the confluence. Once
there, I spotted a homestead nestled in the surrounding hills. I took a
few photographs and headed back to my car.
As I returned to my car, I was once again escorted across the field by
the horse. He stuck around for me to take one photograph and then
left me as fast as he had approached. I thought I might have time to
visit one more confluence if I hurried.
