#1: The confluence area

(visited by Sam Gallucci)

27-Mar-2004 -- I reached the White Tank campground in the Joshua Tree National Park. I remember the previous visitors had started at the Belle Campground. But White Tank campground looked more interesting to hike from. Lots of huge round boulders. I also wanted to do some good off-trail hiking and decided to go straight-line to the confluence.

After a gentle flat hike, the rest was up and down. I reached the first hill and climbed it and found a canyon and another hill with radio equipment. Made it up the steep side (the direct way) to the confluence. Since taking on 34N 117W last weekend, I decided I needed a new GPS. I was still learning the functionality of this one. I found what seemed to be the site and let the WAAS kick in.

It was a Santa Ana condition in Southern California which lets for cooler temps in the desert while the warmer air gets warmer for the coast. Today was in the upper 70s lower 80s. And both of the other visits where in the fall. All the way along the way to the confluence where brightly colored bloom desert flora. But, amazingly enough, when I got over the small hump to within 100m of the confluence, the area seemed to be devoid of flowers.

San Jacinto Mtn and San Gorgonio Mtn(tallest in So Cal) where both visible from within 100m of the confluence. Both are some 50 miles or so away. Santa Anas make for very clear skies.

I took the easy way back down toward Belle campground and veered to the west when I was in the valley back to White Tank campground and my truck. I continued the day as I started it, with some geodashing.
