13-Apr-2004 -- It was my daughters' Spring Break and time for another California Confluence Adventure! 38n-122w would be the fourth of seven confluence attempts for this trip. Our Garmin 2620 scored again! Following excellent directions to 37n-122w, I entered 38n-122w as a waypoint and once again, it did an excellent job guiding us – even saving us lots of time from the way I had originally planned on a paper map departing De Laveaga park and the previous confluence.

Northbound on Interstate 680 just south of Concord, traffic came to a complete stop. Overhead were 4 helicopters stacked a different altitudes and hovering facing the freeway. Above them, a small aircraft circled. Something big had happened – we learned the next day that a small aircraft had crashed onto the freeway, landing on a minivan and injuring a small girl inside.

We got off at Willow Pass Road and followed it north to a pull-off just north of the Contra Costa Canal. The TerraServer image shows this quite well – the southeastern end of the pull-off is the closest point you can get to the confluence because of the fence. Noting that inside 100 meters is a valid visit to a confluence, it was time for pictures. Picture #1 looks north-northeast. Picture #2 looks east-southeast towards the confluence which is well before the tree in the distance. Picture #3 looks south-southwest. Picture #4 shows my eMap 51 meters away.

This is a quick, drive-by confluence but that made us three out of four for the trip. Onward towards 38n-123w!
