04-Feb-2001 -- This pretty forest confluence lies just 300 feet behind the West Virginia State Police Barracks. We decided to go in and give them the confluence letter, but we were foiled because it wasn’t open. I guess they don't have crime in West Virginia. The ridge in the background is the Allegheny Mountains, which forms the boundary between West Virginia and Virginia. Fortunately it's a relatively easy hike from the police barracks area, which is reached by a hike up across a field and climbing over two barbed wire fences. It's close to the small town of Moorefield, WV.

From the barracks we cut across a field to the tree line where we climbed about 200 feet to the confluence (N39 79W). To the east lies South Branch Mountain. To the west a branch of the Potomac River. The confluence, which is easily reached up a gentle slope through thinly-spaced trees right off of route 220.

The drive was interesting. This was a part of the country we had never seen. We were really in the boondocks. The mountain streams and forest surrounded us. I would recommend visiting Moorefield, WV anytime, the people were friendly and we had a wonderful meal at Anne's Cottage on Route 220.
