Japanese Narrative

22-May-2004 -- This visit was a little unusual in several ways. The most obvious of which being that we were accompanied by a TV crew. A few weeks before the visit NHK (Japan's national TV station) had contacted Ken to see if we would participate in a piece that they were making about the confluence project for the 10 o'clock news.

We decided that the safest plan would be to return to Shuzenji and finally get the zeros. The previous visit had been our first confluence and the confusion over the Tokyo datum had eaten up most of the day. By the time we got close it was too dark to make our way across the stream that lay between us and the point.

To avoid making the same mistake again, we arranged to meet up with NHK at 7am in Yoga. After a brief look at the map we made off towards Izu. Making a brief stop for Ken and Takashi to eat breakfast we made our way to Shuzenji. From there we took the road toward Ono and parked in a layby less than 200 meters from the point.

Walking back down the road put us at 139 longitude, about 70 meters to far north. As suspected after the last trip the point was through dense bushes on the other side of a stream. We had passed a makeshift bridge over the stream by the side of the road. After (carefully) crossing over we made our way through the undergrowth back to 139 longitude and started to move south into the woods.

The point lies in a valley about 70 meters from the road. After the usual wandering around under the trees to find a clear view of the sky, the zeros where found.

If this had been a normal day we would have gone home, but instead we hung around for an hour while the cameraman took footage of the zeros and everyone was interviewed. (Jon Ellis)

2004年5月22日-- 今回の探訪はいくつかの点で少し変わっていました。というのもTVスタッフが 同行していたのです。この数週間前、NHK(日本の公共放送局)から、10時のニュー スで confluence project について取り上げるにあたって、その取材に協力し てもらえないかとのコンタクトがありました。

最も安全な策として、我々は 修善寺 を再訪して今度こそGPSのゼロ表示を得ることを目指すことにしました。 前回は自分たちにとって始めての挑戦だった上に、日本測地系 (Tokyo datum) をめぐる混乱で時間を浪費してしまい、やっと目的地点に近づいた時には辺り は暗くなってしまい、その手前にあった小川を越えることができませんでした。

同じ誤ちを繰り返さないよう、NHKのスタッフとは朝7時に用賀で待ち合わせま せました。地図をざっと確認した後、伊豆に向けて出発しました。途中、Ken とTakashiの朝食のために少し停車した後、修善寺に到着しました。そこから 大野という地域へ続く道路を通って、目的地点から200mほどの道路脇の待避所 に車を停めました。

経度が139度ちょうどになるところまで道路を引き返したのですが、そこは目 的地点よりも70mほど北でした。前回ここに来た時に思ったとおり、目的地点 は深い薮の中の小川の向こうにあることが分かりました。丸太を倒しただけの 間に合わせの小さな橋を道路脇に見付けたので、それを（慎重に）渡った後、 もう一度経度が139度ちょうどになるところまで進み、そこから南の方角に森 の中へ入っていきました。

目的地点は、道路から70mほどの谷間のようになっているところにありました。 いつものように、木々の下で空が見えるところを探し回った後、GPSのゼロ表 示の地点に辿りつくことができました。

普通ならこのまま家路に着くところですが、今回はその後1時間ほどこの周辺 にとどまって、カメラマンがGPSのゼロ表示を撮影し、我々全員はインタビュー を受けました。 (Translated by Ken Wakasa)
