18-Aug-2004 -- This confluence is located in northeastern Pennsylvania, a few miles from Hazleton, and easily accessible from Interstate 81. I was driving from my Maryland home (very close to 39N 77W) to visit relatives in upstate New York, and visiting the confluence required only a short detour from the 330-mile trip. It was a hazy but pleasant day, a little humid but not too hot (the altitude of this rather hilly terrain probably helped make it a bit cooler).

To reach the confluence from I-81, take the exit for Route 93 south (although 93 goes almost due east here). Just past the Penn State University-Hazleton campus, turn left on Airport Rd. which leads to Route 309. Turn left on 309 north. After about half a mile, turn sharply left onto Old Turnpike Rd. The confluence is about 0.75 miles down the road from this point.

The road descends steeply all the way to the confluence. There is no shoulder on either side of the road, although I found a convenient parking spot in the driveway of a boarding kennel about 300 meters from the confluence. The confluence is located near the bottom of a driveway, but the point itself seems to be in some thick woods on the south side of the road, just east of the driveway. As I took pictures from the roadside, a couple of guys were having a jam session in their garage. One of them came out and asked me what I was doing. He didn't seem to understand my explanation, but he didn't mind my presence too much, either.

Comparing my pictures with those from the previous visit, it appears that my visit took place about 20-30 feet down the road (west) from the other visit. Several features, including a road sign, a telephone pole, and part of the driveway, are visible in both sets of pictures.

Near the top of the hill on Old Turnpike Road, about 1.1 km east of the confluence, there is a clearing in the forest (probably for power lines) that allows a nice view of the valley below. The elevation here is about 460 meters (the confluence is at 360 meters).
