31-Oct-2004 -- Habíamos estado planeando este viaje por un tiempo. Lo anunciamos como un evento oficial de nuestro club de offroad en nuestra pagina web (www.explora4x4.com) y lo llamamos el “Reto 31°N 109°W”. Después de haber tenido tres búsquedas de confluencia exitosas, esta era la primera vez que intentábamos visitar una que estuviera fuera de nuestro estado. Además, a diferencia de las anteriores que se localizan en terreno desértico y de acceso relativamente sencillo, esta se encuentra en medio de la sierra sonorense.

Muy temprano el sábado 30 de octubre nos dimos cita en un punto predeterminado cerca de la carretera varios de los integrantes y amigos del club. El proyecto de las confluencias ha despertado mucho entusiasmo entre los amantes del offroad de nuestra ciudad, y es por eso que cada vez mas gente se está uniendo a la búsqueda de confluencias.

A eso de las 8 de la mañana tomamos la carretera que lleva a Janos, donde nos estaban esperando el ex alcalde y su esposa en su casa con un desayuno bastante sustancioso. Mas tarde partimos hacia Monteverde y Altamira ya por terracería. Poco a poco el paisaje fue cambiando de desértico a semi-boscoso hasta que llegamos a Rancho Grande ya en medio de la sierra. Continuamos por la ruta que habíamos trazado utilizando mapas de la zona y el GPS hasta donde se termino el camino. Debido a que ya era tarde decidimos buscar un lugar para poner el campamento. Ya instalados, cenamos, tomamos y platicamos hasta bastante entrada la noche.

Al día siguiente nos levantamos temprano para seguir con nuestra búsqueda. Trazamos nuestra ruta y abordo de nuestros todo-terreno avanzamos hacia la confluencia utilizando arroyos secos y caminos muy poco andados. A 4.5 kilómetros del punto nos fue imposible seguir en los vehículos, así que tuvimos que caminar. Dos kilómetros después el terreno se volvía cada vez mas y mas difícil. Desde la cima de una montaña nos pudimos dar cuenta que el punto de confluencia se localizaba detrás de la montaña de enfrente. Acordamos que debido a lo accidentado del terreno y al poco tiempo con el que contábamos ese día no podríamos llegar a nuestro objetivo, y habría que planear una mejor manera de llegar a él en otra ocasión. Estábamos a 2.46 kilómetros del punto a 1899 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

Cansados regresamos a nuestros vehículos y emprendimos el camino de regreso, con la inquietud de no haber alcanzado el objetivo, pero con la firme intención de volverlo a intentar próximamente en otra salida que titularemos “31°N 109°W La Revancha”.

We had been planning this trip for quite a while. We posted it in our off-road club’s website as an official event that we called “Challenge 31°N 109°W”. After having completed three previous confluence searches successfully, this was our first try at a confluence outside our state. Besides, the previous points of confluences are located in desert landscapes with relatively easy access, and this one is in the middle of the mountains of the “Sierra Sonorense”.

Early Saturday, October 30th, several members and friends of the club gathered at the specified spot near the highway. The Confluence Project has been taken very enthusiastically by our local offroaders, and more and more people are joining us in the confluence searches.

At about 8 in the morning we took the highway towards the city of Janos, where we were being expected by the city’s ex-major and his wife in their home with a really good breakfast. Later we took a dirt road to the town of Monteverde y Altamira. Slowly the landscape changed from desert to semi-wooded and we got to “Rancho Grande” in the middle of the Sierra. We continued using the route that we had traced using maps of the zone and the GPS until the road ended. It was late and we decided to look for a good spot to camp. Once settled, we ate, drank and chatted well into the night.

Next morning we woke up early and continued our search. We traced a new route and headed towards the confluence in our vehicles through dry creeks and abandoned trails. 3 miles away from the confluence it became impossible to continue in the Jeeps, so we had to walk. A little over a mile later the walk was getting harder and harder. From the top of a mountain we realized that the point of confluence was located behind the next mountain. We agreed that due to the rough terrain and the fact that we were short on time we were going to be unable to accomplish our objective that day, and that we had to plan a better approach next time. We were at 1.53 miles from the point and at 6220 feet above sea level.

Tired we returned to our vehicles and started our way back, with the fact that we hadn’t been able to reach our objective in our minds, but with the strong intention to give it a second try in an outing that we’ll call “31°N 109°W The Revenge”.
