13-Nov-2004 -- No map is always a problem. Well we did have a Garrmin "mapsource" on the computer but it does not give fine detail. Good maps are difficult to get in Uzbekistan. We new the railway was in the way and negotiated that. We went round the industrial estates and the open quarry/mine. Then the road crossed a large, deep drainage ditch. We would have to cross back over it nearer the point. Unfortunately we got to 5.5km to the south of the point and came to the bridge. There were tyre tracks and locals said that tractors went across. I am sure they were telling the truth but I wouldn't have liked to drive my car across and nor did the taxi driver. So defeat this time - the sun was setting (the last day of Ramadan)- and no time for lengthy detours. Maybe another day. Back to Karshi with just one
