08-Feb-2001 -- This was an unsuccesful attempt at reaching N41W122.

I plotted a route via 20+ miles of dirt road from the south all of which appeared more drivable than the 4WD section through the valley north of the site. The Pitt River runs along this area of forest and the first picture shows the dam under the Bridge at Fenders Flat road.

I brought my mother as a security witness since the day before my previous attempt a body had been found dumped along a remote road near Big Bend. We encountered snow occasionaly on the road, frozen hard enough to drive over. At 5.8 miles (10 miles of road) the tires of my all wheel drive car broke through and we were high centered. Tire cables, digging and pushing proved fruitless and we found cellular coverage after walking 2 miles back down the road. A sheriff came to our rescue after the California Highway Patrol sent their helicopter over to mark our position in case were were lost in the storm coming in that night. Despite the Cherokee and winch it was still difficult getting out. We got stuck again before leaving the snow and the confluence behind us as darkness fell. Another attempt would need to wait until the road was clear or I found a better equipped vehicle.
