23-Mar-2006 -- Just by accident the idea to visit 45S 171E came to my mind while travelling on the Southern Island of New Zealand. Somehow I also remembered that there is an internet page where those visits are documented. So I decided on my way from Invercargill to Christchurch to stop at this very location.

After leaving Omaru I programmed my old Garmin 12XL to show me the direction and distance. A couple kilometers behind Pukeuri I turned left onto SH83 northbound. After a few kilometers I turned right on Gray Road and - almost dead ahead - the target. Should really it be physically on the road? No - it was to my right on, at this time of the year, grass land.

Close to Skinner Road I parked the car and was looking around to find either the landowner or any other person. Nobody. - After a while I decided it is OK to walk on the grass those approximately 150 meters on a meadow without destroying too much. So I walked down Gray Road to a point where I "just" needed to cross a barbered wire fence perpendicular to the road and find 45S 171E. I was lucky. At that very point there was a simple wire fence. No danger to tear my pants. A fraction of a second after crossing the fence I felt a bite into by right foot. A snake!?! - Well, quite unlikely in New Zealand, I thought after a while. - My hamradio handheld tranceiver fell off the belt and hit me on the toe. Good, I felt the pain. Otherwise the radio might have been lost in the grass.

So I picked up my gear, rushed to the point my GPS receiver was pointing to and took a quick shot of the antenna of my ham radio device lurking out of the grass. Another shots of the GPS receiver and a series of pictures for a 360 degree panorama. All in all it took me less than five minutes and I was back on Gray Road. Another minute "on the road again" heading towards Christchurch. Quick, fast and successfull.

After returning to Germany I began searching the internet page to publish my visit a couple days go.
