#1: the confluence in the extreme foreground and view north

(visited by Christopher Anton)

10-Dec-2006 -- Flying just for the hell of it isn't supposed to be green anymore but with Ryanair offering flights to Knock from Stansted for £8 (inclusive of taxes) I just couldn't resist. Perhaps they thought there wouldn't be much to entice people to north-west Ireland in the middle of December, but 3 poorly-documented confluences seemed an ideal reason to me.

So a whirwind 24 hours in Ireland saw me hire a car at Knock and spend the night on Achill Island quite close to my first target. The car hire woman was full of doom and gloom wondering if I'd manage to get through the floods. It continued to rain throughout the visit and my plans were not helped by my leaving my walking boots in England.

I got up at first light on the Sunday morning (9am) and had breakfast and checked out and drove to the first spot. There's an unclassified road past some house which takes you quite close, before it peters out into a farmer's track. I've never seen so much water flowing off the land and when I set out across the peat it was like walking in a lake. Pic 1 shows the view to the North approaching the confluence, and Pic 2-4 complete the views East, South and West and also show the extreme wetness of the ground. Pic 5 is the GPS display on the spot.

So eastwards to 54N, 8W.
