10-Dec-2006 -- continued from 54N 8W
As I headed back towards Knock Airport from Carrick-on-Shannnon I knew that I would only have little time to get to 54N9W, but I made the detour to see how close I could get. This one is along some back roads to the north of the N26 and the previous visitor remarked that much tramping of bog was necessary - not a viable option with the diminishing time and lack of suitable footware.
My Multimap was not the best, but it got me just over 1km away. Pic 1 is taken from this spot and shows the direction of the confluence and the depressing state of the ground if I had attempted it. Experience of many Scottish confluences has taught me that tramping across even moderately dry bogs is not easy, so it was not a difficult decision. Pic 2 shows the view to the South from this spot showing the view down towards Swinford. Pic 3 is the GPS at this spot.
Having given up I got the car back to Knock International in good time - enough to sample its delights - probably the only international airport in the world to have a Christmas grotto. They also charge you €10 to escape as well.
