2008 Ireland Tour

Big brother of "Son of Weed"

Continued from 54N-08W

I need this point to complete all of the land based points from 51N-00 through to 54N-10W a block off 44 points covering 84,300 square miles.

Mapquest says that there is a road that goes within about 750 yards of this point, but as I have discovered this week, a map and reality aren't always the same thing.

What doesn't help is that the TomTom maps of the unclassified roads also don't bear much similarity to reality and are about 400 yards out! Makes navigating fun at times :-(

After several dead-ends I finally find a track that isn't on either the map or the satnav. By Track I mean 6 feet wide and stone chips not tarmac!

I followed this for about 400 yards and parked by a new barn - not completed anyway - but containing an ancient caravan and an equally old car. Get kitted up and set off.

As is also becoming usual for this trip, the ground is boggy and there is evidence of peat cutting. The CP is in the direction of a pine plantation and may be inside it. I am hoping not as that will make progress really slow.

I navigated via the higher and only slightly drier points, following the edge of the forested area. I go around the corner (crossing a ditch) and realise that the CP is in fact in the open. Some you win.

There is a small stunted tree exactly on the spot of the CP, averaging settles down on 5.0 feet of accuracy, though the best photo shows 5.2 feet.

What isn't evident from the pictures is that this was during a severe weather warning, the wind was gusting to 60 mph and when the showers came down the rain was horizontal.

You can see in the photo to the East a house about 1/2 mile in the distance, that would give much easier access if you can work out how to get there!
